For this week in GIS 5050, I completed a cartography lab (#2) where I produced a map showing the location of the main UWF campus.  I used light colors (green, yellow, and blue) that are easy on the eye.  I used Broadway font in the title for some fun.  

 I did not have too much difficulty completing the lab except for when I had to select two Escambia County cities (Pensacola and Ferry Pass).  In the attribute selection I kept incorrectly using "AND" instead of the "OR" expression.  I finally figured it out, and after that it was smooth sailing onward.

This week in GIS Programming, we learned about the basics of Python, including working with string variables, function and method calls, importing modules, running and saving Python script using Notebook in ArcGIS Pro, including comments in scripts, creating loops and conditional statements, and using iterate variables within loops to control script workflow. GIS Portfolio

I am proud to present my portfolio , which fulfills GIS Internship (GIS 5945), my final course for the graduate certificate in Geographic Information Science (GIS) at the University of West Florida (UWF).  This may be the last entry to this blog, at least during the remainder of my time in the program. In this entry I will provide highlights from my portfolio and what I accomplished for the GIS internship along with some final thoughts on the program. The primary goals for the internship related to my work as a professor at Gulf Coast State College (GCSC) in Panama City, Florida.  These involved: developing a World Regional Geography with GIS course, producing site maps for GCSC archaeological research projects, and conducting basic spatial analysis. Surfaces: TINs and DEMs

In this week’s lab, we learned about the use of surfaces in GIS, specifically creating, editing, and analyzing TINs and DEMs. Through the assignment, I was able to create 3D visualizations of elevation models, use various input data sets to create and modify TINs, and compare the properties and derivatives of TIN and DEM elevation models.  TIN is abbreviated for triangulated irregular network; it is one model that is used to represent surfaces including elevations, through a combination of point, line, and area features (Boldstad and Manson 2022:40). DEM refers to digital elevation model or digital terrain model (DTM) and it is commonly used for terrain analysis (2022:66).
